MANILA – Bearing a cross which contained the names of the fallen SAF44, some relatives trooped to the Office of the Ombudsman on the second anniversary of the botched Mamasapano operations on Wednesday.
They were accompanied by groups Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC), Citizen's Crime Watch (CCW), and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN).
The families called out the Ombudsman's seemingly slow investigation on their complaints of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and multiple physical injuries against former President Benigno Aquino III, former Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Alan Purisima, and former Special Action Force (SAF) Director Getulio Napeñas.
Three sets of complaints were filed by 9 SAF44 relatives last July 1 and 15, and August 12. However, they learned that Aquino was only asked to answer the complaints by the last quarter of the year
Telly Sumbilla, mother of slain Police Officer 3 John Lloyd Sumbilla, pleaded for the Ombudsman’s office to take pity on them, and help them ensure that those who left their loved ones behind will be punished.
BAYAN Secretary General Renato Reyes meanwhile demanded to know who benefited from the bounty for Zulkifli bin Hir alias "Marwan", who was the main target of the raid in 2015.
VACC Chairman Dante Jimenez said they will give Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales less than a year to finish the investigation, or else, they will call for her impeachment.
They also want the Ombudsman to investigate allegations that the US military was involved in the operation, dubbed "Oplan Exodus."
