First-term Senator Manny Pacquiao's joke on hanging as his preferred mode of execution for death convicts didn't sit well with returning lawmaker Senator Francis Pangilinan.
On interpellation by Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III, Pacquiao said he was in favor of hanging or firing squad.
Pacquiao had just delivered his first privilege speech, one that pushed for the imposition of the death penalty.
"Para po sa akin, ang nananaig ngayon ay yung hanging or firing squad," Pacquiao said.
"Dahil mura?" Sotto, who started to laugh.
"Sisipain lang ang upuan," Pacquiao said in describing how hanging is done.
This drew more laughter from both the plenary and the gallery.
Pangilinan, who used to chair the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights during his first term as senator, later made a manifestation that killing a death convict was no laughing matter.
"Earlier, perhaps out of levity para siguro mawala ang konting kaba.
