A local court in Davao del Norte has issued an arrest warrant against self-confessed Davao Death Squad member Edgar Matobato for the 2002 kidnapping of alleged terrorist Sali Muck Doom.
A radio dzBB report said Judge Dorothy Gonzaga of the Panabo City Regional Trial Court 11th Judicial Region Branch 4 issued the arrest warrant on Monday.
Also ordered arrested for the kidnapping case was Matobato's co-accused, Sonny Custodio.
The judge did not recommend bail for Matobato and Custodio.
The kidnapping case was filed by the National Bureau of Investigation's regional office in Davao region last January.
Matobato's camp said the arrest order caught them by surprise.
In a phone interview with GMA News Online, Matobato's lawyer Jude Sabio said they had recently filed a third supplemental motion to quash the information and to put on hold the issuance of warrant of arrest.
Matobato also asked the court to order the prosecutors to conduct a reinvestigation on the case, citing the testimony of retired SPO3 Arturo Lascañas.
Sabio said Lascañas himself cleared Matobato of the crime, adding it was the policemen who abducted Muck Doom.
"Meron na pa lang arrest warrant? We were hoping na i-resolve muna ang motions namin. Matagal na nakapending sa court yun," Sabio said.
Like Matobato, Lascañas implicated President Rodrigo Duterte in the unexplained killings in Davao City when the chief executive was still its mayor.
