A PICTURE of pride and joy were etched on the faces of stakeholders who witnessed the inauguration of the Davao City-UP Sports Complex Multi-Purpose Human Kinetics Building (Training Gym) and groundbreaking of different sports facilities at the University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao campus in Mintal, Davao City late Friday afternoon. Former Davao City third district representative Isidro "Sid" Ungab, who sourced out the funds for the construction of the 20-hectare sports complex during his term, said the activity relived memories of long ago when he, then Davao City Mayor now President Rodrigo Duterte and Ramirez were pushing to make the building of a city sports complex a reality. Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez, who represented President Duterte, congratulated UP and the City Government of Davao for making such bold move in pursuing a center for sports excellence which he said can be a sports mecca in Mindanao. The PSC chief recalled that he and President Duterte, while he was still mayor, committed to give a counterpart from the City Government of Davao to help fund the sports complex. "I am committed to support the sports complex. I am duty-bound to produce the amount we committed before, may it be from Malacañang or from the PSC Board," Ramirez said as he acknowledged his two commissioners Charles Raymond A. Maxey and Arnold Agustin who were also present during the inauguration program held at the newly-built training gym. He also pledged to bring in experts to help in coaches and athletes' education through the Philippine Sports Institute that was launched at the PhilSports Multi-purpose Arena in Pasig City last January 16. "The children will benefit greatly from this sports complex," Ramirez added. UP president Alfredo Pascual, for his part, said: "At the start of my term, I was committed that UP shall undertake and support development of sports and all what sports can bring about, making sports development an integral part of UP." Thus, he said, he is "satisfied" by the knowledge that the sports complex will be built and completed for Dabawenyo youth who he hopes will become leaders for social progress in the future. Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) officer-in-charge Mikey Aportadera, who represented Davao City Mayor Sara DuterteCarpio, said: "This is every athlete's dream. Athletes, I believe, are happy with this new gym and the sports complex. Aportadera also read the mayor's statement, congratulating UP Mindanao on its 22nd foundation anniversary and inaugurating the training gym. "With the construction underway, we are getting more equipped to make our bid to host the 62nd Palarong Pambansa in 2019. It has been 67 years since we last hosted this event and we feel it is time we bring it back to our soil," Duterte-Carpio said in her statement.
