FORMER Marawi City Mayor Fajad Umpar Salic was arrested in a police checkpoint at San Martin village, Villanueva town, Misamis Oriental around 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 7.
Salic was on board his white Ford Ranger pick-up truck with plate number AFA 1151 when he was flagged down by policemen belonging to the Misamis Oriental Provincial Public Safety Company. Salic was said to be heading Cagayan de Oro City.
Lemuel Gonda, Police Regional Offcie-Northern Mindanao spokesperson, said the former Marawi City mayor was arrested for rebellion or for violation of Article 134. Gonda said Salic is temporarily detained at the Villanueva town police jail facility as of 11 p.m., Wednesday.
Salic is related to the Mautes by marriage. His wife, Rasmia Salic, is the niece of Farhana Romato Maute, mother of Abdullah and Omarkhayyam Maute.
The Maute Brothers are said to be among the top leaders of Dawlah Islamiya, one of the groups who pledged loyalty to the extremist Islamic State. But Salic was also reported to have been acting as a go-between of the government and the Mautes last year.
Salic was reported to be one among a group of “influential relatives of the Mautes” who met with President Rodrigo Duterte, at the President’s invitation, in Davao City November last year.
The President supposedly wanted to convince the Maute brothers, who were by then already involved in several clashes with the military in Butig, Lanao del Sur, to talk peace with the government.
